The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition. The event is organised by the sport’s governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB), and is contested by the men’s national teams. The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and is now contested every four years. The tournament is one of the largest international sporting competitions in the world.

The event is scheduled to be played over seven weekends from the weekend starting 10 September and culminating the weekend starting 22 October 2011.The weekend of the final was chosen so it falls on a long weekend caused by the New Zealand public holiday of Labour Day (Monday, 24 October 2011).The final is scheduled to be played in Auckland  at Eden Park.

The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup. William Webb Ellis was the Rugby school pupil who – according to popular myth – invented the game after picking up the ball during a game of football. South Africa are the current World Champions, having won the 2007 Rugby World Cup final in France on 20 October 2007 with victory over England, the 2003 World Champions and current runners-up. The next Rugby World Cup will take place in 2011 in New Zealand. The hosts for 2015 and 2019 have been announced as England and Japan respectively

he 2007 competition was hosted by France, with matches also being held in Wales and Scotland. South Africa claimed their second title by defeating defending champions England fifteen points to six. The 2011 tournament was awarded to New Zealand in November 2005, ahead of bids from Japan and South Africa..

Rugby World Cup Limited has recommended to the IRB that the 2015 and 2019 World Cups be held in England and Japan, respectively.

I have a question about the Matthew Johns sex scandal, and the way men have been portrayed in the media?

Given the fact that it has now come to light that the woman at the centre of the scandal is in fact married to a New Zealand rugby Union player, how does this new information impact on your opinion of sports men as a collective whole? Are they all still tarred with the same brush?

You don’t need a wide brush to hit all those meatheads. Right in the middle of this sex scandal one of the other teams decides it’s a good idea to bring a stripper into their locker room before the game, and other players are turning up to practise full of E.

One of my nephews has been courted by various managers since he was in his mid-teens, and you can see that this culture of idiocy is ingrained pretty early on. I suppose that’s to be expected when you’re treated like a god for being able to run and hit things.

How much can you feed your own team the ball in a scrum and get away with it?

I am VERY VERY new to watching rugby (I have seen two matches and that is all and read a rule book). In both matches I have noticed the ball being blatantly fed to one team during the scrum instead of right down the middle like I have read that it should be. Is this just something the officials are lenient about or am I missing something? Thanks for answering a rookie rugby fan‘s question.

One question which has to be asked is which version of rugby — rugby union or rugby league — were you watching? Those two games diverged about 100 years ago, and are now quite different in their flow and character.

In the League version of the game (played mostly in northen England and Australia) the straight in rule has not been enforced for years. League scrums are now effectively uncontested — so much so that that the scrumhalfs will roll the ball directly into the second row, and while the two front rows still bind they generally don’t bother to push at all.

On the other hand, in rugby union (worldwide, the more popular version of the game) scrums are still highly contested and the straight in rule enforced — at least as best it can be. That said, it is a difficult rule for the referee to officiate and scrumhalfs (being human) will try to get away with what they can. A very common trick (and a perfectly legal one) is to spin the ball as it is put into the scrum in such a way that the ball will naturally roll in the desired direction. The feed is technically straight, but is has the effect of making it look crooked.

Welcome to rugby — its the best game in the world.

What are your predictions for the 2011 rugby World Cup?

Mine are:

Pool A:
New Zealand
France
Japan
Tonga
Canada

Pool B:
England
Scotland
Argentina
Georgia
Romania

Pool C:
Australia
Ireland
Italy
USA
Russia

Pool D:
South Africa
Fiji
Samoa
Wales
Namibia

Quarterfinals:
Australia over Fiji
France over England
South Africa over Scotland
New Zealand over Ireland

Semifinals:
Australia over France
New Zealand over South Africa

Final:
New Zealand over Australia

The All Blacks win the rugby World Cup.

Your thoughts?
my mistake, I meant to have South Africa over Ireland and New Zealand over Scotland

Your picks look good but ive got a gut feeling this year and i would put ireland ahead of australia in pool C. They would then go on to beat Fiji and France but inevitably lose to NZ. Im not sure why i feel like its their year to make a run to the title game i just do. Also in a side note although it doesnt matter in the long run i saw canadas test match against the US in which they won convincingly, i would not put it past the Canadians to beat Japan and Tonga in pool A
