Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll reaches 100 caps
Brian O’Driscoll is about to reach the landmark of 100 caps for Ireland is certainly cause for celebration.
But those raising a glass to Irish rugby‘s talisman for the last decade may also have a sobering thought nagging away at them.
To many, the Irish skipper has done it all after leading his country to that long-awaited Grand Slam last year, going on to win the top club honour in the game with Leinster’s Heineken Cup triumph.
The Lions tour to New Zealand in 2005 was, arguably, to have been his finest hour, leading the cream of British and Irish rugby on their journey to take on the mighty All Blacks.
But it all ended quickly, in desperate disappointment for O’Driscoll, as he was injured in a controversial tackle just one minute into the first test match.
The Lions complained that the star player had been a victim of a disgraceful spear tackle, but the damage had been done and O’Driscoll’s tour was over.
O’Driscoll, a product of Blackrock College, made his international debut as a raw 20-year-old against Australia in Brisbane in 1999.
“In my time playing rugby and watching rugby he was certainly the best centre – by far. Jeremy Guscott was one of the best attacking players I ever played against but Brian had the all-round package.”
Those telling you to watch out for this young fellow were smugly mouthing ‘told you’ less than a year later as the boy from Clontarf burst on to the international scene with a blistering Six Nations hat-trick against France.
“If O’Driscoll hadn’t scored on that day, his performance was still the best I had ever seen,” recalled former Ireland captain Keith Wood, who led the side that day. “His presence offered hope for the rest of the team.”
O’Driscoll had caught the imagination of rugby fans worldwide and, since then, has more than delivered on that early promise.
“I have played with Brian for many years and we all know he’s world class. Every team in the world fears and respects him,” said Ireland full-back Geordan Murphy.
“And during the Lions tour, I could see just how much he had developed as a player and a leader, how much he understands the game and the impact he has on other players.
“I think he has a few more years left. Ireland have looked after him, they have not overplayed him.
“He is important to them as an individual and captain as they work towards the World Cup.”
O’Driscoll has played in three World Cups, been on three Lions tours and savoured Six Nations and Heineken Cup triumphs.

How do I be a jumper in rugby and yet be an aggressive rucker/scrummer/tackler?
I’m 14 years old and I’m 73kg. I just hit puberty but my voice hasn’t broke yet. Right now i want to be a jumper and I want to know how to be a good second row/flanker while rucking/scrumming and tackling well. Right now my tackles are all at the shin-knee level. My stamina isn’t really great it’s about 13:10mins in 2.4km. I want to know how to get my fitness better and how to overcome the phycological barriers such as thinking I will get injired and feel a lot of pain while crashing/tackling/rucking. I also want to know how I can crash well. My main questions are how to get fitter and jump high as well as breaking the physicological barrier.
Whats the classic ‘King in the Pit’ drill?
Core strength, core strength, core strength. work your abs! A strong center is needed for all the things you mentioned wanting to improve.
For jumping, practice your vertical leap over and over and do thousands of crunches and sit-ups.
For the tackling/rucking, work on short sprints (about 5 meters), drop to the ground and do 5 push-ups, pop up and do the same thing heading in the other direction. Do this over and over till you are exhausted. Then do it some more.
To get over your fear, there is nothing better than the old ‘king of the pit’ drill.

Playing the Third Baseman in baseball
The batter is only one step from a home run, and it is your position to make sure that they don’t get to the final step. As the third baseman, you will need to prepare yourself to stop the opponents from getting all the way to the end. If you become familiar with some of the situations, then you will easily be able to work towards a better game and getting the opponents off the field before they get to far.
Like any other players on the field, you always want to make sure that the third baseman is prepared. Unlike other players, they will not be moving in a large amount of space, or as fast. Instead, they will be in charge of knocking down the ball and making a final play. Most likely, this means that not only will the third baseman have to maneuver slightly different than the other players, but will also mean that he has to walk in prepared differently. Because the main objective is to stop the ball, having a larger glove is often required in order to finish the job.
There are two major plays that third baseman should always be prepared for. The first is to tag the player coming towards the base. By standing in a ready position, this will make it easier to get the ball from whatever angle is needed and to get the player out. Knowing how to stand in the right position in order to tag or cutoff the play is one of the most important things that a third baseman needs to learn.
Another possibility that a third baseman should look out for is bunts. Usually, it can be determined what type of hit will take place simply by watching the batter get ready. If you see a bunt coming your way, the first thing to do is angle yourself so you can get the ball and throw it to first along the line. By doing this, you will be able to get one of the players out from the bunt.
With the third baseman, the most important thing to remember is that the baseball will be coming for you at a certain angle. By being prepared on every side, it will be easier for you to make a good move and get the opponent out. By taking the right moves and being ready for every type of play, the third baseman will have the ability to get the ball and the opponents back to first without the points.

Bradford Says Matt Orford Will Not Return To The NRL
Bradford half back Matt Orford says a report for the pre-season training in the English Super League club next month, although the new speculation linking him to return to NRL.
The 32 years, the former Melbourne and Manly number seven, tent that has been signed, the Bulls’ in 2010, has two years left on his contract of employment, but returned to Australia before going to his first season with shoulder surgery and found himself in high demand.
Canberra chases are known to services and new Parramatta coach Stephen Kearney, who has worked in Storm Orford, revealed a passionate interest.
Kearney, who succeeded Daniel Anderson Eels, told his first press conference that wants to return to the NRL Orford and warned them to expect progress in the coming weeks.
However, Bradford and CEO Ryan Duckett said, the future coach Mick Potter can not wait to Orford to the club next season. “Nothing has changed,” he said.
“When Matt came home, is an activity, he told us it was fully committed to the club and he had to return to training in early November.” He agreed to keep the team in two years. “
Meanwhile the rugby football League in England are to take a pro-active stance to increase the number of British coaches in the Super League.
Bradford’s recent appointment of Australian Potter as the successor to England boss Steve McNamara left just three Britons in charge of the 14 clubs, although Harlequins are expected to appoint a British successor to Brian McDermott.
John Kear (Wakefield), Brian Noble (Crusaders) and Richard Agar (Hull) are the trio of home-produced coaches, but the League are to identify 10 current British players and put them on a coaching pathway.
The players will initially be involved with academy and junior teams but the player-to-coach programme will be designed to help them reach the top.
Martin Crick, the RFL’s national coach development manager, said:
“We know how important it is to have British coaches involved with British clubs and it is our task to help ensure that we can develop as many first-class coaches as we can who can apply for the top jobs.”

England V Australia rugby: hosts unaware of Toby Flood’s role for the first test
The fault lines that appeared in Australia’s preparations for the first test at the Subiaco Oval on Saturday may not constitute a chasm, but they do suggest that everything in the Wallaby ranks is not as slick as they might like to think.
There was an embarrassing collapse of the disciplinary case against Gloucester lock, Dave Attwood, cited for two incidents of stamping in Tuesday’s game against the Australian Barbarians, England successfully arguing that the matter had been procedurally bungled as the citing officer was Australian and therefore not independent.
Attwood, however, is likely to be warned by England about his future conduct and possibly even suspended.
As well as Wednesday’s slip-up, it seems that key members of theAustraliasquad seem wholly unaware that Jonny Wilkinson has been eclipsed in the England rankings by Toby Flood. “That would be a surprise if Jonny doesn’t start,” said Wallaby scrum-half, Will Genia, who is lobbying to convince his own coach, Robbie Deans, that he has fully recovered from a knee injury.
England will once again go with Flood, as they did in their last match of the Six Nations against France in Paris.
In the side to be named on Thursday, Danny Care will partner him at half-back while former New Zealand rugby league international, Shontayne Hape, will make his debut at inside centre, the only change in the back line.
In the pack there will be three changes, Steve Thompson replacing injured hooker Dylan Hartley, Tom Palmer stepping in for Louis Deacon and Tom Croft getting the nod over James Haskell after missing the entire Six Nations through injury. Croft’s line-out dexterity was a significant element in Leicester’s Premiership triumph.
While Wilkinson’s omission from the starting line-up is no longer a major surprise at home, it definitely is for Australians, who still identify him as the man who won the 2003 World Cup for England.
Flood, however, is still very much on trial despite his 29 caps. The Leicester fly-half has to direct operations with the same assurance and positivity as he showed at the Stade de France. Wilkinson will be a notable asset on the bench, a cool head for the end-game.
Alongside Flood, England have been itching to see what Hape can deliver at this level. The 29 year-old has size and good hands although his kicking game is far from refined and his pace unthreatening. However, England believe their back three can prosper from his off-loading game. “He’s a smart player, always one with that more time on the ball,” England manager Martin Johnson said.
Australia also name their side today and are set to draft teenage full-back James O’Connor into the squad after his impressive hat-trick against England on Tuesday night. Even if Flood’s presence suggests that England will be more expansive, wing Mark Cueto made the sensible point yesterday that they would be daft not to exploit their superiority up front.
“Whether we’re labelled boring or not, we’ll go down that route,” Cueto said. “The objective is to win. We know where we’re strong.”
England have summoned Northampton back-row forward Phil Dowson, who was due to captain the Saxons against Russia in the Churchill Cup in America, as a replacement for Leeds flanker Hendre Fourie, who will return home with calf and ankle injuries.

Hey man, I play for Penn State University, which is a pretty good college team here in the US. At the university level, rugby is very competitive on a couple of different levels, and very strong out west. After college, there are plenty of club teams across the country that travel and compete. The Rugby Super League is very good. Just find a team locally, they’re always open to new players, specially coming from a great rugby country such as SA. Good luck!
