What’s the difference between Rugby League and Rugby Union?
Short answer — Union has a contested breakdown — League does not.
Long answer — Union has 15 men per side on the pitch. League has reduced the number of players to 13. They’ve taken out the flankers to open up attacking lanes. Union scrums are eight men — League has reduced them to six.
The biggest single difference comes at the breakdown/tackle. In League, play stops at the tackle. All but two defenders retreat ten metres, and the tackled player then gets up and nudges the ball backwards with his foot (called a play-the-ball and sort of similar to the “snap” in American football) to a teammate who restarts the play. This is intended to simulate the presentation of a “quick ball” at the back of a Union ruck.
If the offensive team hasn’t scored after six tackles, they turn the ball over. Again, sort of like the downs-for-distance system of American football. Teams will usually kick — either for territory or a chip or grubber directly into the try zone — after the fifth tackle. If it goes to six, the (formerly) defending team restarts with their own play-the-ball.
Union has a “contested” breakdown. A tackled player must release the ball and both sides are then free to contest for it. The process is called a ruck, and although it looks like total chaos to the uninitiated, it really quite organized. The rules — which are quite strict as to how and where you enter a ruck — are such that the offensive team will usually keep possession, but it is by no means a sure thing. There are (unlike League) certainly no guarantees.
The same for scrums. League scrums are effectively uncontested because the put-in law is not enforced. The scrum half rolls the ball directly into his second row while the two packs no longer even bother to push. Union scrums are still highly contested massive shoving matches, and while again the team with possession has an advantage, there are (again) no guarantees. The same for the lineouts after the ball goes into touch. Union lineouts are contested, while League has replaced them with their uncontested scrums.
All of his makes Union the more nuanced (albeit somewhat slower) game. Because possession is never guaranteed, territory becomes more important than having the ball in hand. The goal of every Union squad is to play the majority of the game in the opposition’s half of the field. Even if the other team has the ball, you still have a reasonable chance to turn it over after a tackle or win a penalty while still in their end. This means that the ability to kick well tactically — for territory in your own end or chips, up-and-unders or grubbers in the opposition end — is critical. You rarely (if ever) see that sort of tactical kicking in League — the territorial gain is rarely worth the risk of losing possession.

What position would I best suit in rugby!!!!?
Hi my name is Matt Shaw and I am 10 years old. Next year I’ll be 10 in a half. I have a weight of 40 kg and I’m one of the two fastest runners in the class. Although the other fastest runner likes soccer I might be a Right wing. I have a height of 150cm so what about lock or flanker. Sometimes im a very good kicker so what about a first-five. based on that i’d say inside centre if you can kick aswell, possibly fullback if you get a bit bigger…
playing lock if you’re fast is a waste of your speed, it’s better suited to positions like centres, wing or fullback…
but like said before at your age nothing can be determined, decide what position you like playing and improve yourself to best suit it, time is on your side…

What do I want for Christmas?
I’m a female in my mid 30′s, married, 2 kids, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits. I am an outdoorsy person, feel at home in my jeans, boots, rugby top and cap. I rarely wear makeup and i’m not into cosmetics or bath stuff.
